Background of the Study
Family planning is a critical public health intervention aimed at improving maternal and child health, reducing unintended pregnancies, and empowering women to make informed decisions about reproduction. Nurses play a vital role in family planning counseling, as they are often the first healthcare professionals to interact with individuals seeking family planning services. In Kaduna State, Nigeria, family planning counseling by nurses has the potential to address high maternal mortality rates, early pregnancies, and unsafe abortion practices, which remain significant public health concerns (Olawale & Bello, 2024).
However, despite the availability of family planning services, studies indicate that knowledge gaps, misconceptions, and cultural barriers can hinder the effectiveness of counseling. The role of nurses in addressing these barriers through accurate information and support is crucial for the success of family planning programs. This study seeks to assess the effectiveness of family planning counseling provided by nurses in Kaduna State, explore the factors that influence the success of counseling, and recommend strategies to improve counseling practices.
Statement of the Problem
In Kaduna State, despite the existence of family planning programs, there are challenges in ensuring that patients receive effective counseling. These challenges include inadequate training for nurses, cultural resistance to family planning methods, and misconceptions about contraceptive use (Oluwole et al., 2024). This can lead to suboptimal uptake of family planning services, contributing to high rates of maternal and child morbidity and mortality.
This study seeks to examine the effectiveness of family planning counseling provided by nurses and identify factors influencing its success or failure in Kaduna State.
